Clean clothes, dirty water: The fibers in the ocean

The damage that can cause all kinds of detergents and conditioners into the water, known to everyone. But even without washing them is not neutral to the environment. With the average fleece sweater for every laundry is washed away about 2 thousand. synthetic fibers that do not decompose, swim through all the sewers - and fall into the river and then into the ocean.

The existence of micro- synthetic materials in sea water - not the news. Floating in the ocean of waste ( read: ... They are often found in water samples taken at the beach or water intakes. However, globally, the issue is not addressed.

Took up the Irish ecologist Mark Browne (Mark Browne) and his team. Together with colleagues from all six continents, they held a gathering of sand in 18 points in the ocean, and isolated from a plastic fragments and fibers. The analysis showed that about 80 % of this waste are synthetic materials used in the manufacture of apparel.

None of the points covered by the work, there was absolutely clean sand: every 250 ml of it contained between 2 and 31 of synthetic fibers - polyester, acrylic, etc. n. Of course, the dirtiest samples obtained in the more populated areas, which once again confirms the artificiality of these particles.

To completely ... So they showed that, after each washing in water fall hundreds, even thousands of synthetic fibers.

The damage that can cause these particles into the water of the ocean ( and with it - and living here in living organisms), it is quite clear, although a special study of this question no one has ever spent. Browne believes that this is not necessary: they are ...
